Public domain is a term used to indicate that works are no longer protected by copyright and related rights. In the EU, this is the case when the maker has been deceased for at least 70 years. In that case, there is no rightful claimant and there is no permission needed to use the work.

Houten schilderijstandaard voor het schilderij 'Vrouw schilderend aan haar ezel' van Gabriël Metsu. De standaard bestaat uit een rechthoekige plaat, waarop een metalen plaatje is bevestigd waarop staat "G. METSU". De plaat heeft een opstaande rand. Op de plaat is een smalle lat aangebracht met een dwarslat. De onderzijde van de standaard is beplakt met rood vilt.
