Meschac Gaba

With his colourful and playful works, Meschac Gaba (1961, Cotonou, Benin) poses important questions about preconceptions surrounding different cultural identities and the lack of economic balance in the world. At the same time, he ridicules contemporary art and museums.

A special edition of Gaba’s work Citoyen du Monde (2012-2015) was exhibited at De Meelfabriek. This immense flag, which contains all of the world’s flags, imagines a harmonious coming together of all the peoples and cultures of the world. The seven-metre wide flag hung between two buildings at the factory site, visible from afar. As such, the flag was the sign for the exhibition: a message of a world in harmony, and equally an ultimate human idea as an absolute utopia.
