Call for students in Leiden

Make the Parade of the Future

You can no longer apply. Questions? Contact Wytske Visser: w.visser@lakenhal.nl

The Leiden parade tradition has a long history, but what does the parade of the future look like? Who will participate and what costumes will they wear? Will we use holograms, or something that does not yet exist? Museum De Lakenhal wants to work with you to create a parade of the future.

Do you study in Leiden (mbo, hbo, University) and do you have an idea of what that parade should look like? Then participate in this project with artist Frank Koolen. In five workshops you and a group of fellow students will design and build a parade of the future. On February 8, you will walk through the streets of Leiden in this parade.

Leiden celebrates - now and 450 years from now

The city of Leiden has a long tradition of parades - think of the inauguration of Leiden University and of course the Great Parade on October 3.

In the exhibition Leiden celebrates - 450 years of parades we look back at this tradition and see how the parade has changed over the past centuries. From a procession for a small elite, it grew to one in which a large part of Leiden's population participates - or stands along the side watching. What will be the next step in this development? Who will march in it? What will be remembered or celebrated in this parade of the future, or what will be be paid attention to?

something for you?

Are you between the ages of 18 and 25? Are you a student in Leiden at the mbo, hbo, University or Studio Moio? Do you participate in a parade, or do you never go because you think things should be completely different? Do you get energy from creatively and artistically working out this question about the parade of the future? Then join this project. Devise the music, clothing and route in five workshops and work together to create a parade of the future. The workshops will be guided by visual artist Frank Koolen.

About Museum De Lakenhal

Museum De Lakenhal is the visual arts and history museum of the city of Leiden. The museum is housed in the former Leiden Cloth Hall, a building that dates back to 1640. The collection includes highlights by old masters such as Lucas van Leyden, Rembrandt van Rijn and Jan Steen, alongside works by modern and contemporary artists such as Theo van Doesburg, Charley Toorop and Erwin Olaf. Leiden's illustrious past is covered in collection presentations such as The Siege and Relief of Leiden (1574) and Seven Centuries of Leiden Cloth.

About Frank Koolen

Frank Koolen is a visual artist. He also teaches at the Utrecht School of the Arts. His way of working is characterized by sudden inspirations and associations related to a place, encounter or question, which are then translated as directly as possible into a sculpture, installation, performance or video. Recently, he made a Monument for the Unknown Vandal for Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar. In 2023, his work 'Onze Sporen' was unveiled on the Bètaplein in Leiden. Because of his great interest in folk traditions and rituals, he enjoys working on the project “Parade of the Future".

This project is made possible in part by the Mondriaan Fund.
