Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn

Dit tafereeltje met een brillenverkoper is een allegorie op het gezicht. Het behoort tot een serie van de vijf zintuigen die Rembrandt rond 1624 schilderde. Hij was toen ongeveer achttien jaar oud; het zijn Rembrandts vroegst bekende werken. Hoewel het werk nog vrij onbeholpen oogt, loopt het in aandacht voor clair-obscur en psychologie van de figuren vooruit op het latere werk waarmee Rembrandt beroemd zou worden. De kleding van de brillenverkoper is die van Oosterse marskramers, die indertijd hun waren op jaarmarkten aanboden.
